Iconography/Generic Conventions

Horror

Iconography - Certain images/sounds that represent a particular film genre.

The Horror genre is represented through iconography by using images for e.g. blood/gore, abandoned houses, knives, masks etc. It can also be represented through sound e.g. violins (the instrument of death), Creaks, screams, scratching etc.

Horror films are usually about people who are alone or in an isolated area and tend to be followed/haunted throughout the film. This increases the feeling of vulnerability and makes the film seem more scary.

Lighting is also an effective example of iconography in Horror films, especially when it is used to cast shadows. They can be used to create fear of the unknown or to show a juxtaposition between good and evil. Often the main character will be shown in a brighter light where as the spirit/murderer etc will be shown in darkness or shadowed.
