In order to create tension in horror movies sound is used to manipulate the audiences feelings.

 

One way is incidental sound, as, for example, it could appear each time the scary character is about to appear, however sometimes only the audience can hear it, rather than the characters.

 

 

This sound effect appears in 'The grudge' each time she is going to kill somebody, therefore creating tension for the audience.

 

Soundtracks are also important to films as it gives the audience something in reality that can relate to the film, making it even more scary.

 

 

Now, each time the audience hears this film they will automatically associate it with this film, which means they are scared, even though they are not watching the film.
