Sounds associated with horror

To help build up tension in a horror film sounds can be used to make the audience feel on edge.

This is a scene from the film "Insidious" where the film is about to get really tense, A music sound track is used to help do that. The music used itself has quite an upbeat rhythm, but the vocals singing on top of that could be heard as sounding disturbing.
This helps build up more suspense and wonder what is about to happen.

Incidental sounds can also be used in a film to create a certain atmosphere, they usually start to play every time someone/something appears on the scene. The sound track below is the music that appears on every one of the films from the Saw franchise. This could also then be used to play on things like adverts, and it may then trigger the audience into remembering that that was music was from the film.

Also when the Jigsaw if first introducing himself to a victim, a pre-recorded message is played to the victim. This can make the audience remember that after this speech, horrible things will happen.
